Toruń Astrophysics / Physics Summer Program 2018

The Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Informatics of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland, is pleased to welcome applications for the 2nd edition of the TAPS program. TAPS is an opportunity for students interested in physics or astrophysics to lead a 4-week-long summer research project in one of the following areas:

  • Interstellar spectroscopy
  • Quantum Chemistry
  • Density Functional Theory
  • Positron Physics
  • Biomedical Imaging
  • Trapped Ion Techniques
  • Light-Matter Interactions
  • Quantum Communication
  • Quantum Entanglement
  • Quantum Non-Markovian Systems
  • Plasmonic Networks
  • Graphene Plasmonics
  • Hybrid Nanostructures
  • Optical Atomic Clocks and Ultracold Matter
  • Data Analysis for Eyetracking
  • Molecular Modelling of Biomolecules

For each participant we will offer the student housing in Toruń and a daily allowance of 50 PLN (~12 euro), which are more than sufficient to cover the living costs during the stay in Poland.

Advanced undergraduate & PhD students from all countries are encouraged to send applications for the summer program before April 20th, 2018, 14:00 CET – for details, see *application*.

Program

The main component of the summer program is an active participation in the selected astrophysics / physics research project offered by the staff members of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, please see the topics and their descriptions below. Interested students are welcome to contact possible advisors for more details concerning the foreseen projects and discuss the dates that the project could be undertaken.

Apart from the projects, once a week we will organise an invited lecture and a lunch or dinner for the entire group. We will also offer short trips / sightseeing in the Toruń area on selected weekends. All students will be asked to give 15-minute presentations about the results of their projects at the end of their stay in Toruń.

Application

We kindly ask all interested students to provide us with the following information in English:

  1. Application form;
  2. Curriculum Vitae (max. 4 pages);
  3. Motivation letter (max. 1 page);
  4. Letter of recommendation, e.g. from their scientific advisor, staff member from their institute, former internship advisor, etc. (optional);
  5. The title(s) of the project(s) they would like to contribute to.

Complete applications should be send to taps [at] fizyka.umk.pl before April 20th, 2018, 14:00 CET. The results of the selection procedure will be announced by April 30th, 2019.

Please note that we cannot reimburse your travel expenses to Toruń.

Housing

Students will be offered single occupancy rooms in the dormitories of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, located at the walking distance to the Physics Department. The astrophysics students may choose to stay in the University hostel in the Astronomical Observatory in Piwnice n. Toruń, about 15 km away from the city center. In case those students choose to stay in Toruń, they will be obliged to buy the monthly intercity bus ticket from Toruń to Piwnice (~100 PLN / month) from their regular stipend.
