10 YEARS KL FAMO

The National Laboratory of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics was established in 2001. Its 10th anniversary this year will be celebrated with a two-day meeting organised under the auspices of Prof. Barbara Kudrycka, Minister of Science and Higher Education. The meeting will comprise:

- Scientific Session (in Polish) on 16 September 2011
- International Symposium "Quantum Metrology with Photons and Atoms" on 17 September 2011

- Międzynarodowe Sympozjum “Quantum Metrology with Photons and Atoms” 17 września 2011 r.

THE FAMO PROJECT

A group of physicists representing Polish universities and institutes of Polish Academy of Science comes with an idea of establishing of National Laboratory for Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics in Torun. This important field of physics, rapidly developing in many countries (two Nobel prizes in last years), has suffered a serious insufficiency of funding in Poland, which resulted in a prejudice for Polish science and education. Atomic and quantum optics brought great wealth of practical applications in the recent century: starting from use of lasers in medicine, engineering and everyday life, via application of optical fibres in telecommunication, up to utilization of atom optics in semiconductor technology. This field of physics has been the one, which allowed deep exploration of many mysterious features of Quantum Mechanics.

The main planned subjects of interest for the research activities of the Laboratory in its initial period are following:
